ETA: Logged out and gone to sleep. Good night, all!

I'm going to be trying to figure out what city I should be setting my urban fantasy in. (Or at least, what it should be an analogue to, geography-wise.)

I'll be on Discord for a couple of hours, if anyone wants to join me:

(This time I'll remember to edit the post to say when I log off Discord!)

I've been so busy, and so focused on spending my free-time-to-write on original projects, that I feel like I want to talk to people on Dreamwidth but don't really have anything to write a post about.

So let's start with the essentials, which is two friends who are currently in need of a bit of help.

[personal profile] kuwdora, who makes amazing vids, is taking vid commissions to help pay for a career development opportunity.

...and it seems the other friend has reached their financial goal for the thing they needed, which I saw halfway through writing this entry, so. Please consider helping out kuwdora!

*

I'm busy planning London things (when I'm not busy doing other things). I've bought contact lenses for the first time in my life (putting them in and out is AWFUL but having them in is pretty wonderful). I finished watching "The Handmaid's Tale" and the "Game of Thrones" premiere and feel weirdly similarly about both.

Sunday was picking up my contacts and hunting for a birthday gift for a friend and getting stuff from the pharmacy and overall I got home from work around 8:30pm. Monday was pilates at 5pm, followed by my roommate's friends coming over at 9pm for Game of Thrones. Tuesday was going to buy new walking shoes (mine have holes in them and I need something for London), and because I needed a specialized store I yet again came home at like 9pm.

Today is going to be swimming (because my pilates class was canceled), followed by an optometrist appointment.

Basically just really, really long days. I've mostly been spending my weekends doing fuck all because of it, lol.

Anyway, I'm looking for ideas for what to do in London. So far I have the staples (places I've been and can always happily spend time in):
- british museum
- V & A

Potentially interesting but also maybe kind of boring (I have a friend who'd LOVE both of these but for me they're kind of "oh ok" sort of options):
- tour of parliament
- tour of buckingham palace

plays (I have to pick one):
- Matilda in the west end
- Much Ado About Nothing at the globe
- Queen Anne at heymarket (I do love Romola Garai)

Other than that I have: walking around various parks. LOL.

There's definitely loads more to do in London, but I feel like I've done the more obvious touristy stuff (Sherlock Holmes house, the eye, transport museum (LOL I know this is less obviously touristy, but I liked it)) and the less obvious stuff I'm not familiar with?

(I've always wanted to do the loo tour, ever since meeting the owner/tourguide at a party, but it seems every time I'm in London the times don't work out ;_;)

Anyway, suggestions for stuff to do are very welcome!

hi!

Subscription/Access Policy: Friend away! I'm always looking for new friends to talk to. As for access, I grant almost everyone that subscribes to me. If I ever lock something it'll be something really personal and might be trigger-y. I will always warn if I do post something of that nature. There's no pressure to grant me access back.

Fannish Interests: Gosh, okay, I like a lot of things. But I also need to catch up on a lot of things. That's my problem.

I watch a lot of tv. Right now I'm watching shadowhunters and deciding if I want to catch up on Teen Wolf or not. My love for Scott McCall is enternal though.

I really enjoy pokemon,  digimon,  yugioh,  sailor moon, power rangers, tf&f series, harry potter, kingdom hearts, and classic spn. all of those were my fandoms before I ever knew what fandom meant. i am casually into new doctor who but Ten was my first doctor and my favorite era. I'm always there for the companions the most though and I love bill potts so much. i love sherlock holmes adaptations but i gotta say my favorite is elementary. i'm also into low energy video games so pretty much anything nintendo and the sims. I'm a little obsessed with the sims and the fandom it has on youtube. just a little. Superheroes are cool too! I like the mcu and dcu but i haven't watched all of it yet bc reasons. Omg star wars is a big one lately too. and the new Star Trek and hopefully the new series!! as for cartoons steven universe is like the best thing that ever happened to me probably. aaaand books!! gosh do i hope to actually start to read books. The last full thing I read that wasn't fanfiction was the hunger games.

sp in summary i love anything cheesy, ridiculous, and about friendship :D

I Like To Post About: honestly? cute animals. cats especially. i'll post about all the things i care about and I might  do reaction posts to a show or movie etc. I hope to at least post fic or a rec or just journaling in general! I'm trying to find my place in dreamwidth after being on tumblr for so long now.

About Me/Other Info: I'm an ace nonbinary (she/they pronouns) lesbian. I'm autistic, mentally ill, and have chronic pain & illness. I'm infp, capricorn, and a hufflepuff.

hurt/comfort is my whole life. It's like my one true kink. I love reading it, writing it, having discussions about it, reading meta about, you get it. It's my jam.

I'll mostly comment on stuff for a while probably. I have a strict rule that is if I see an entry/read a fic/etc I comment on it. <3

Doctor Who (and St. Trinian's)

The best part of the Doctor Who casting announcement is that it opens up EVEN MORE amazing possibilities for horrifyingly beautiful St. Trinian's crossovers.

"Oh, Beverly!" called Miss Fritton from her office, leaning over and waving one hand. Beverly could see one her out of the corner of one eye.

"Yeah, miss!"

"What's that little knobbly thingummy you're pointing at the door?"

"It's a sonic screwdriver, miss!"

"What's it for?"

"Nothing, miss!" There was Dalek invasion and the First Years were busy lobbing explosives from the tower while Beverly - the Doctor, really, but she'd been undercover for years and thought of herself as Beverly still - remodulated the alarm system to broadcast a frequency that would short-circuit their disruptor beams. The Daleks, not the First Years.

Though Beverly privately thought the First Years infinitely more dangerous to let loose upon the human race than the Daleks, but she did have standards after all, and centuries of enmity with the Daleks to uphold.

"So what you're saying," said Miss Fritton, appearing in her doorway with an empty bottle of vodka in one hand, "is that we're out of vodka and you forgot to stock up, is that it?"

"Get the gin, miss," said Beverly, holding back a sigh.

The thing I like about this is Lifehacker article is that it explains the various problems with gluten that people have, and also it lies heavily on the "don't be a jerk if you think someone is a 'faker' with their gluten sensitivity" principle. Which. DON'T BE A JERK ABOUT PEOPLE'S FOOD ISSUES. Whether you think they're faking it or not isn't really the important thing.

Also it's just a really good article that's in the Celiac 101/Gluten 101 vein.

Hello! On my way to Vancouver/Seattle this Sunday (!), I will be having a nine-hour layover in SF, meaning I'll be able to be in the city pretty much from 11 to 4PM. I haven't been there since 2006 so I'd love to hang out downtown; if anyone wants to hang out please be in touch via any platform :-)

Glow is getting less attention than Wonder Woman, but this article is reminding me a lot of the articles about the Amazons working in the background of Wonder Woman - or what would have happened if they'd hired non-athletes and trained them to be athletes for Wonder Woman.

The pattern is free (and color-coded for each section, which is awfully nice), so even if you don't make it, you should either save it to your Ravelry library (if you have one) or download it for future planning purposes JUST IN CASE. It's pretty simple, and should you be looking to learn short rows, this is a good one for that.

It was also translated into French, should you be a native French speaker or wish to practice your French or French-based knitting skills. (I don't believe Ravelry pattern writers turn down translations of their patterns, should you wish to donate your time to spreading the fandom love, but if you are interested, the comments section on the pattern post is here, and my experience on Ravelry's comments has been generally pleasant.)

Bubbling along nicely. It dried out a bit the first night because I forgot to latch the lid (whoops), but did not turn green like batch #1 did, so I am not worried about botulism this time around.

I should have started with the King Arthur's Flour sourdough starter recipe all along. Also used distilled water. Our water gets a distinct algae scent in the summer.

Fannish Interests: Doctor Who, Avatar: The Last Airbender, MCU, DCTV, the new Wonder Woman movie, Type Moon, Steins;Gate, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, the 100, and whatever else has caught my fancy this month. I would really like to rewatch some things I'm really rusty on, like Stargate SG-1, too!

I play video games very, very occasionally. I love Portal and recently Mass Effect.

I like to post about: Most of my journal, right now, is a series of Dear Author letters. I write fic a lot, usually for exchanges. However, I just decided I'm going to do a fandom autobiography to keep myself coming back for a while and to develop a habit. The first installment of that fannish autobiography is up now, so you can see what me rambling about myself looks like. Other things I'm likely to write about are similar to things I write about on my tumblr (only to be ignored in general) such as character arcs, reactions to episodes, fanfiction, fanfiction ideas, and random tidbits about my life from time to time.

About Me/Other Info: Dog person, Aquarius, INFP. Nightowl, chronic napper. I like monsters and space. Never 100% outgrew my emo/goth phase but also sometimes wear pink. I just finished a teacher preparation program in May. Currently, I'm looking for a job. My sleep cycle is a wreck right now due to unemployment, and I'm trying to make my life something that is a little more satisfying to me in a lot of ways. 95% of what I do on the internet is related to fandom in some way. I am a religious person, but I do not post about it except where it is relevant to any personal posts I make. I just thought you should know because we won't be good-match friends if you tend to post negative things about religion (any of them, not just my own). I'm socialist-leaning politically, but again, I try to make my action and life speak for themselves and don't really preach to choirs or blog about it that much. I'm bi but chronically single and currently mostly okay with that. I know like five-thing about CSS and HTML and might someday get into making stuff with that.

London hangouts?

Jul. 9th, 2017 02:32 pm
marina: (Default)
[personal profile] marina
I know I've posted about this before, but now that we're closer to August and the convention, I want to mention it again.

I will be in London August 1st-8th.

August 1-2nd, I'm totally free and currently have no plans. So if you want to meet up (during the day or in the evening), let me know! I'm open to doing touristy stuff together like museums or palaces or things, or just meeting up for a quick coffee or dinner or something.

August 3rd (Thursday) - I'll have the day free, and in the evening I plan to be at Nine Worlds (there's various social hang outs?). But these plans are flexible!

August 4-5th (Friday-Saturday) - I plan to be at Nine Worlds pretty much all day. If you're going to be at Nine Worlds as well:

On Friday I'm going to do a talk about Women, War and SFF at 5pm.

On Saturday I'm on two panels:

* Non-anglophone fanworks, fans and canon, at 10am.

* Screenwriting & scripting the fantastical, at 3:15pm. (Please note this panel will also be attended by Mike Carey who created Lucifer, wrote Hellblazer for several years and wrote the book and script of The Girl With All The Gifts. Not that I'm a bit *__________* about being on a panel with him or anything!!)

So, if you're going to be at the con, talk to me! I've never been to this kind of con before, where a lot of people are living on the premises, but in theory I'm also cool with hanging out with non-con-going friends in the evening. Talk to me and we can figure something out?

August 5th (Sunday) - I'll be at Nine Worlds until the afternoon, probably? And then am free to meet up. (If no other plans materialize I'm planning to stay at the con and do the Sunday night stuff.)

August 7-8th (Monday-Tuesday) - I'm free again! These days might (or might not?) be a bit busier since a fandom(?) friend from Nigeria who'll also be at Nine Worlds will have these days free, so hopefully we can do things together? But I'll also have lots of free time I assume/lots of time to meet up with other people.

I feel weird because every time I've come to London I've felt beforehand like "omg I have like 1 friend in London, and they have a job, so like I'll just be alone the whole time and not do anything basically" and then somehow I'm IN London and suddenly there's too many people to see and too little time.

Anyway, whether we've met before or don't know each other at all, if you're fannish/are reading this post I'd love to try and meet up! One of my favorite people is actually someone I met in London during a 12 hour layover like 6 years ago, we'd never spoken online, and she just popped up on one entry like "so hey you'll be in London? Let's meet up!"

I've since traveled to visit her in Delhi, we've spent a week in Prague together. I LIKE HER A LOT. So you know. I'm up for meeting people!
